You might also like to consider adding Free4all in there as well..

Free email, 25mb webspace and best of all free domain name hosting. Plus very
Amiga friendly too.

People in glass houses shouldn't throw stones, Steven ;) I'm no
expert on grammar, so I'll leave that alone, but I'm pretty sure
"appaling" is spelt with 2 'l's, and "internet" should be capitalised

Pretty much any 4.3GB hard drive should work in your A1200, as
long as you have the right software and interface. It looks like you
have the right software, and I presume you have cables to connect a
3.5" IDE device to the A1200's internal 2.5" connector.

Subject: [afb] Uninitialized Partition
MIME-Version: 1.0
Content-Type: text/plain
Content-Transfer-Encoding: 7bit
Hi All,
Yesterday I installed loads of software onto my new (replaced)
10.2Gb hard drive. After leaving the computer on for quite some
time I have lost my partition.
The problem is that I do not know what software to use to validate or
repair it again because of its size and configuartion. BTW, this
partition did not become 'uninitialized' due to crashing or turning
the computer off during a write.
My basic configuration.
A1200 '040 25Mhz
Power Flyer with 810Mb boot drive (no probs!) on unit 0,
10.2Gb hard drive on unit 2, and Cd rom on unit 3.
The 10.2Gb drive is split up into 4 partition 3.8Gb, 3.8Gb, 1.7Gb,
0.5Gb.
However, the other partitions on this drive still work.
I used to use Disksalv2 but I think that it might not work with
partitions over 2Gb. What else can I use?
Please help.
Nick.

Hi All.
I'm using Microdot 2 that came with the Netconnect2 package.
Sometimes, when I try to send an e-mail it bounces saying that
'Could not send 8bitmime message' (or something like that)
What does this mean and how do I avoid it?
Thanks

1) Upgrade to the y2k compliant version available from
http://www=2Evapor=2Ecom
2) If this doesn't fix the problem then Ithink it is cos of you using

Are you running OS3.5? I've got the same problem with my 13Gb drive, it's
reported as 9.5Gb and only 6Gb is usable. I thought BoingBag1 would have
sorted it, but the problem still persists.
OS3.5's support of >4Gb HD's isn't all it's cracked up to be, and I'm
getting a bit fed up with only having half my HD at my disposal. :-/

Hello,
Having been online only three weeks i am slowly learning a few thing each
day.
I went to the amiga rc5 website today and downloaded the software.
Anyway is this comp still running or has the key been found?
Cheers,
Sam Thomas

Yellow Pages is a name licenced out to most major telcos; they don't own
the brand, but they do have a licence to use the trademark for a certain
period of time.

reports 'creating New UIN' but has not changed for the last 5 minutes what
is happening how do i get it to work? the STRICQ Log says:

That's because you're using an old version, and Mirabilis has changed the
log on procedure since. Go to teh above web page and get the latest beta

I, too, use 'ise', but I'm fairly sure that 'ize' is English, while 'ise' is
American. The two languages are becoming so interchangable that I hesitate
to suggest which might be "correct".

For fear of resurrecting up an oft-covered AFB thread, it matters when the
messages are difficult to read. Some people completely ignore capital
letters and punctuation, making for a 'stream of consciousness' message.
Everyone makes typographical errors, and I'd like to meet the person who can
spell *every* word in the dictionary, but I wouldn't say that it doesn't
matter.

Is it just me being cynical, or are BT being particularly clever with their
marketing on this one. I mean, for apparantly the first time, they have
announced their /intentions/ before OFTEL have agreed that it can be
launched.
OFTEL may very well get objections from "free" ISP's who hold a telco
license complaining about "unfair competition" or the like. But if they
refuse BT permission, they (BT) can say something like "Well, we tried to
give people unmetered access, but OFTEL won't let you have it."
Hmm...

You're right (basically), but MacOS doesn't find a SCSI device at unit
6, only an IDE device. And MacOS does not have a clue what to do with an
IDE device on a (virtual) SCSI bus...

But it doesn't need to.
atapi.device (from IDEfix) will quite happily convert SCSI commands to IDE.
I use it myself with FUSION with my CDrom and HD. Works great.

Oops, sorry then. I once tried to convince Fusion to use an IDE HD via
scsi.device (yeah right) but couldn't.
The solution was to mount it on AmigaOS' side as DH5: and then put it
into Fusion's list of usable devices. The disadvantage is that everytime
I try to install software via Installer it complains that DH5: is not a
DOS drive... which is very annoying.

If you really (and why not) want your money back, all you need do is
point out the law to Steven. Since you have not received the goods
Alive cannot keep the money. They have not provided the goods you paid
for, they cannot keep the money. Time is of no essence here, several
months is plenty long enough for Alive to obtain the goods for resale.
If you still have no joy, tell them that you will be writing a letter to
the Trading Standards, and if that does`nt work, write it!

Come on, it`s a typo. Spell checking wouldn`t have found it either.
And I`m sure Ben`s (wearing his Mr. Ed cap) a little too busy to go over
everything with a fine toothed comb.

S`funny you should point that out. When I first saw it i was sure it
was spelt wrong, so I did a single word spell check - in Outlook :-( .
Wasn`t picked up as a mistake.
But now, when I do a multi-word check it comes up. Either a). Outlook
is crap, or b). I can`t use a spell checker. Tho s`pose could be both
;-)
On the net, or at least in chat areas, people tend to write in a verbal
style rather van propa English, like. Probably (possibly) somat to do
with typing on the fly-of-your-thoughts (tm), which is quite possibly
somat to do with the fact that a lot of English people have to pay for
their online time, or have to post on the hush in office hours (you can
always tell when someone is on the net when they shouldn`t be from the
sound of many keys being pressed; much faster than normal anyway) ;-)

With COD the receiver pays for the package when it arrives so your money
is safe. no goods = no payment, unless ofcourse the package is empty :-(

I've used Amftp to upload to my website and don't recall having any
probs. If I remember some of the progs. on NC didn't work properly untill I
changed the stack size to something bigger Amftp is running on a stack size
of 16000 set up in NC dock bar, I don't use Octopus.

To hide the drive from the OS, Go to HDTOOLBOX, set the FILESYSTEM type to
be CUSTOM 0x0. When you SAVE the changes to the drive, you will get a
warning message stating that the partition will be destroyed.. ignore the
message, nothing is destroyed.
As no filesystem 0x0 exists, the Amiga will not be able to see it, but as it
is still mounted, FUSION will.
It also hides the drive icon as well.

9.5Gb you say? That's exactly how much space HDToolbox says I have and
mines smaller! I also am using FastATA (and AllegroCDFS) that came with
the powerflyer. This in iself supports Hard drives >4Gb.
The other problem is that the patitions show a negative value which
makes installation of old software a problem (unless you use two HD's)
However, I do have a suggestion for all of you out there who have two
Hard drives and a CDrom on your powerflyer. Use one (smaller and
slower)
for booting in different formats (i.e Dopus, OS3.5, PCX etc.) and the
other for other software. Also have a small partition on that hard
drive
called 'Work', this allows you to install older software where 'Work' is
the default. Use the other (larger and probably faster) Hard drive for
all
your work and games. Have this set as a secondary master. And finally
the CDrom as the secondary slave.
The reason for this that you can still boot when the other drive
corrupts,
transfer rates are higher between all devices (the boot drive slows it
down).
I suppose I am just have to format that partition again in my case.
Hope this helps.
Regards,
Nick.

I had some problems with my 13 Gb as well, but then I found out that
putting the file AmigaOS Rom Update from the 3.5 CD into Devs:
(having a 4-way IDE interface I had not installed it) allowed me to
repartition everything and get the whole HD recognized and working.
Hope this helps.

I've just put my 3.1 ROMS from my 1.d.4 with knackered PCMCIA and about t=

Sorry :-)
I only know two ways of using devices:
Using the Peripherals>SCSI settings (try using the Buffered transfers and
Emulated SCSI Hardware settings)
or
Mount it in the Devices section (select removeable device), but a disk might
need to be present at boot time and I'm not sure what will happen with disk
changes.
As I use a SCSI ZIP, I'm guessing that what works for me with CD and HD,
/should/ work for a ZIP.
If it doesn't, sorry, I'm out of ideas other than trying the FUSION ML.
Chris.

Your mail server is having problems delivering mail to future's mail
server. It's just a warning in case you're wondering why they haven't
got it (you might have asked them in person). If it gives up completely
you'll get a proper failure message.

MIME-Version: 1.0
Content-Type: text/plain; charset=iso-8859-1
Content-Transfer-Encoding: quoted-printable
Hi Everybody,
I've got the LinuxPPC cd off a friend, but I'm having trouble getting =
Xwindows to work:
I followed the exact same procedure that I used to sucsessfully install t=
he LinuxPPC that came with AFCD40.
The problem is, when I run startx it brings up the b&w screen with the=
cross-shaped mouse pointer. It then bombs out with this error:
Fatal server error:
Caught signal 11. Server aborting
So, does anyone know what could be the problem? I've tried with differ=
ent versions of the kernal, XF68_FBDev etc. to no avail...
See ya :)

Hi Everyone,
Thanks to Paul (Cundle and Richard (Lane) for their advice.
I tried the Mail Download Manager and it works OK.
I had recently installed the Pop3 module but it keeps on crashing the system.
The last guru stated "Illegal Instruction"
I did save Nick's email as a text file prior to deleting it and one of the
Header lines stated that JavaScript was the language used.
Could this have caused the email block to occur?
Cheers

The competition is definitely still running. We've covered about 19%
of the keyspace so far, and the Amiga team is currently in 5th
position.

This is vaguely OT; though related to the Amiga. I haven't got time to

I have sent a cheque to him which i sent first class last tuesday; now,
how long does it take a first class letter to get from Devon, say to
the Isle of Wight? I got an e-mail from him today (mon 14th) saying he
had not recieved the letter or the cheque enclosed! :-((
How long does it take; i would phone him but i have no cash and i am
very concerned.
This is a ridiculous question i know....
All the best,
Nick.

yes, nice idea...charge the developers for making Amiga
applications. not!
I dont see the MUI problem. pay ONCE and all programs which use MUI can
be customised or setup to exactly how you want them to be. no wonder why
so many people have problems with their software. I can change my
settings in any of the MUI-using programs and go back to that setup when
i next load the program up.

sure, go the cheap route...but all the bells and whistles of P96 only
work on PIV cards - whereas CyberGfx has more bells and whistles for
CyberVision cards

Chances are the mail had a "high ASCII" character in a header, possibly
a sign in the subject. So,me versions of MicroDot had trouble with
these.

It's typical BT tactics. Remember the ISP tarrif announced in
mid-November, more details would be announced at the end of that month
with a launch in mid-December? Then it disappeared from their web site,
even from the news archives.
> OFTEL may very well get objections from "free" ISP's who hold a telco

Hardly likely, since the other telcos have been able to offer this sort
of service all along. Nynex did it in 96/97, Telewest were supposed to be
starting such a service today. It's only BT that are restricted on
unmetered calls, cable companies have been giving them for years.
The "free" ISPs aren't excluded from Surftime, there's a pat as you go
option (1p evenings and weekends, 2p daytime). BT have already hit the
freebies with BT Together. Reducing the costs of evening calls and
making it up with an increased rental reduces the interconnect fees
available to the ISPs.
> But if they
> refuse BT permission, they (BT) can say something like "Well, we tried to

BT and OFTEL seem as bad as each other, both blaming the other party
while nothing gets done.

A question for DPainters out there - as DPaint V was supposed to be
modular, i.e. you can add your own textures, etc. was it the same for
Media? Is there a documented format for creating new Media file and is
there any third party Media files out there?

It's going to take about 2 more years to "crack" the remaing possible
combinations at the current rate.
However they keep popping in other small competitions such as DES or the

the OGR (Optimum Golomb Ruler) challenga actually starts today. These
are useful sets of minimum numbers. I actually ported the OGR-21/22/23
client to Amiga (WarpOS) last year and Amigans solves over 200 billion
nodes.
The current d.net client for the Amiga hasnt been updated for ages (but
work is being done on this by a proper Amiga d.net team now) and so it
currently doesnt do CSC or OGR work...or any of the other client bells
and whistles...but it will do soon.

Mine worked perfectly until I replaced the 4Mb Ram expansion on the machine
with an accelerator. As soon as you speed up the available processor, the
various timing problems and other hardware glitches in the 2B 1200 come into
play.
I got my 2B motherboard 'fixed' by Eyetech, and now it is fault free,

Hisoft have an '060-friendly squirrel driver - although it doesn't seem to
be on their website since the've revamped it. Try them on 01525 718181.
All '060's need it - not just 060/75's.
